Sea Change tells the story of Ro, who finds herself stuck as she enters her thirties. Estranged from her mother and freshly single after her boyfriend leaves to join a mission to Mars, Ro's life feels adrift.

Days are spent dragging herself to a dull job at an aquarium, while her nights drown in sharktinis—a mix of mountain dew, gin, and a hint of jalapeno. Meanwhile, her best friend begins to drift away, preoccupied with planning her wedding. Ro’s only real companion is Dolores, a giant Pacific octopus who represents her last connection to her father, a marine biologist who vanished on an expedition during her teens.

When Dolores is sold to a wealthy investor intending to relocate her to a private aquarium, Ro teeters on the brink of self-destruction. As she wades through memories from her youth, she realises it's her chance to confront childhood trauma, recommit to those around her, and discover her place in an ever-evolving world.

About the Author

Gina Chung is a Korean American writer from New Jersey currently living in New York City. A recipient of the Pushcart Prize, she is a 2021-2022 Center for Fiction/Susan Kamil Emerging Writer Fellow and holds an MFA in fiction from the New School. Her work appears or is forthcoming in Kenyon Review, Catapult, Electric Literature, Gulf Coast, Indiana Review, and Idaho Review, among others. She is also the author of the forthcoming story collection Green Frog. Sea Change is her first novel.
