This week we have the perfect new release for Father's Day (it's coming up soon!) as well as some other great titles to add to your TBR.
New Releases for Dad!
With Father's day literally around the corner, there are some great new releases for the Dad's who read. You can't go wrong with Kiwi rock legend John Toogood whose memoir 'Home Again' came out, chronicaling his time in a little old band called Shihad. I know my Dad would LOVE this. The other book that came out recently which is absolutely perfect for any Kiwi dad is Louis Davis' guide to modern fatherhood, 'The Modern Dad', told in his typically generous and funny way. 'The Body and the Blood' by Molly Crighton is perfect for the crime/thriller loving Dad, a twisty novel set in Dunedin where a mysterious death takes place at it's iconic St Paul's Cathedral. James Patterson is also back with the 18th (18th!!!!) book in the Michael Bennett series, where a number of bombs have been set in New York City and 2 mysterious brothers keep turning up in the wrong places, insisting they re trying to make the world better.
My personal favourite this week is Tīhema Baker's newest novel, 'One Day a Taniwha'. A complex portrayal of mental health and what it is to be a man in Aotearoa, a father, and to be struggling with the taniwha on your shoulder, this is full of beautiful and powerful writing, and will stay with readers for a long time.

“When it was revealed that Jon Toogood was to release a memoir I pretty much jumped out of my seat with excitement!
I’ve been a fan of Shihad since I first saw them perform at Big Day Out 1996, this was the famous BDO which started with blazing hot sun and then had torrential downpours, from memory just as Shihad were on stage the rain fell down and created the biggest mud pit I’ve ever seen. I was lucky enough to see them early last year on their ‘Loud Forever - The Final Tour’, it was such an amazing show and blew me away just how many hits they’ve had over their career. I also remember listening to an interview with Jon on bFM when he explained how they managed to play support and go on tour with Nine Inch Nails. This was organised back in the day with no internet and no cellphones so their invitation to support NIN was received via fax machine!
Safe to say I’m really looking forward to reading this book, I’m sure it will be packed with all sorts of never-before-told stories and behind the scenes of the legendary Aotearoa band as well as Jon’s personal insights into his life and music career."
A couple other highlights:
In her first every sequel to the incredibly popular drama, 'Big Little Lies', Liane Moriarty is back with 'Big Little Truths', and examination of women and their secrets, their lives and their revenge. This is one that I think I will fly through, I can't wait to return to these characters and find out what's happening in their homes and in their neighbourhoods. I'm also very excited about the sound of 'Her Creation' by Jeneane O'Riley, a 'dark and whimsical' standalone romance based on Frankenstein.
