Pliny the Elder (23 79 CE) produced in his Natural History a vast compendium of Roman knowledge. Topics included are the mathematics and metrology of the universe; world geography and ethnography; human anthropology and physiology; zoology; botany, agriculture, and horticulture; medicine; minerals, fine arts, and gemstones.
Pliny the Elder, a tireless researcher and writer, is the author of the encyclopedic Natural History, which spans 37 books and serves as an unrivalled compendium of Roman knowledge.
The contents of the books are as follows:
Book 1: a table of contents for the others and of authorities.
Book 2: a mathematical and metrological survey of the universe.
Books 3-6 cover the geography and ethnography of the known world.
Book 7 discusses anthropology and the physiology of man.
Books 8-11 are dedicated to zoology.
Books 12-19 explore botany, agriculture, and horticulture.
Books 20-27 detail plant products as used in medicine.
Books 28-32 focus on medical zoology.
Books 33-37 discuss minerals (and medicine), the fine arts, and gemstones.
